10 Things

Well, it finally happened. I forgot it was Thursday. I got up this morning. Got the girls dressed, fed, their lunches packed. Dropped Sweet Pea off to school. Ran to the gym to squeeze in 30 minutes. Dropped Baby Girl off to school. Drove to work. Sat down at my computer. And said, "Oh Hell." :-)

So, as you can imagine I have nothing much to say. So I'm going to shamelessly steal an idea from one of our good friends Rhonda Nelson and play a little game. I'm going to list 10 things about me that you might not know. Then I'd like everyone to list some things about themselves that we wouldn't know. There will of course be prizes, mostly because I feel guilty.

1. I come from a HUGE family. My mother is the oldest of 14 children. I have a cousin who is 1 month older than my oldest child. In fact, I have cousins younger than my kids. My youngest aunt is 1 year older than my husband. It makes for loud, interesting family get-togethers.

2. I was in the color guard in high school - you know those people twirling the flags out on the field. I did that because I couldn't play the saxophone and hated the flute.

3. Summer before Senior year I went to Colorado for World Youth Day where catholic high school students from all around the world gathered to listen to the Pope speak.

4. I love camping. As a child we used to camp on Lake Michigan during the summer.

5. I love the ocean but hate getting in the water.

6. I spent my 7th birthday covered in calamine lotion after I contracted swimmer's itch from the lake we had rented a cabin on. It was not fun.

7. When I was five my sister had an allergic reaction to cold medicine and hallucinated snakes everywhere. She was tearing off her clothes, tearing off my clothes, screaming down the hallway. This is why I'm terrified of snakes.

8. When I was eight my brother disappeared. My mother couldn't find him anywhere. She called in the police. Had the residents from the assisted living center behind our house out combing the woods. The neighbors were all called into action. After a couple hours he crawled out from under my parent's bed where he'd decided to play hide and seek (forgetting to tell my mother) and fell asleep. Apparently, he curled up into a shadowed corner and simply blended in when no less than five people checked under that bed.

9. Um, I'm running out of unusual things...my favorite color is green?

10. I wanted to be a ballerina when I was little.

Okay, now it's your turn. Let us get to know you a little better.

1. I suppose everyone knows but you can't assume anything, so I'll admit that I'm WAY older than the rest of the Playfriends.

2. My sophomore year in high school, we had to do an English paper on an American poet. I chose Ogden Nash. In one of my reference sources I found an address and figured "What the heck!" I wrote him and he wrote back! That letter is in my safe deposit box.

3. By the time I was 2 years old I'd traveled to Yellowstone Park and back home (North Carolina). I don't remember a thing about the trip.

4. I didn't have my first date until I went to college. Pathetic, I know.

5. My freshman year in college I took a trip to NYC with the Interfaith Council. We were studying the relationship between religion and the arts. We went to museums and to NBC studios and also to a disco in the Village that Andy Warhol had a hand in founding. The night we were there a group called the Weathermen planted a pipe bomb. I still have a small scar on one leg from that explosion.

6. My husband is a preacher's kid and our 34th anniversary will be the same day as the Readers' Luncheon.

7. #1 son was born prematurely and #2 son was full term, but apparently inhaled coming through the birth canal and developed aspiration pneumonia. So both boys' first photos show them with an IV in their scalp. They're healthy as horses now.

8. I was ranked #9 in my high school graduating class.

9. I hate snakes too. Don't know why, but I do.

10. I won the Betty Crocker Homemaker Award my senior year in high school. It's a HUGE source of humor at our house. It's a written test, for crying out loud. You only had to know what escarole was, not make a dish with it.

Love learning tid-bits.

1. I used to bite when I was little.

2. I've always loved Comic books and comic book characters.

3. As a teen, I got to tour many German castles in my Humanities Class at Frankfurt High School.

4. As a teen, I was selected from the audience at an Heidelberg Castle presentation to participate in the production.

5. I always wore knee-socks, ergo the tan line that ran only from under my knee to mid-thigh where my shorts stopped.

6. My mother taught me to sew when I was 12 and said "from now on you have to make all your own clothes."

7. I can count to 10 in 6 languages. Understand and speak some German, took Spanish in HS, and went to Italian Language School in California for 6 months.

1. I was salutatorian of my high school graduating class until 2 days prior to graduation when final grades came in and some guy bumped both me and the valedictorian down a slot. Of course it was my much hated jr prom date.

2. At one point, I was very fluent in Spanish. I even dreamt in Spanish sometimes. Now I can barely order a taco.

3. I used to be a tree-hugging, uber-liberal, hippie, vegetarian, new-age environmentalist with card carrying memberships to Greenpeace, WWF and the Sierra Club.

4. DB is only the second guy I've ever really dated.

5. I have a three year old sister. Cause my mom's a masochist. And no, there are no siblings between us. I was 24 when she was born.

6. My roommate used to have a 6 foot red boa constrictor named Lily (for all you snake haters out there). She used to curl up on the couch with me and watch tv.

7. I used to weigh like 300 lbs.

8. When I was a baby, my hair was curly and golden blonde. It kept tangling so my mom cut it into a Dorothy Hamill bob and it turned straight and dark brown. It wasn't until I was about 12 that my hair lightened up and went completely insanely curly.

9. I have an irrational fear of clowns.

10. I rode in 1st class from LA to Las Vegas once sitting next to the lead singer of Smashmouth.

I must be too forthcoming in my blogs--I can't think of much to tell y'all...

1.) I once talked to Mikhail Barshinkov on the telephone--for like a second.

2.) I dated a set of brothers--not at the same time, though. The worst part? I went out with #1, then #2, then #1 again.

4) I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 32--this after dancing for all those years...

7) One of my ex-boyfriends is an Olympic Gold medalist now.

8) I was a little sister for the UT Swim Team, even though I can barely swim.
