MOANday-Tattoos

We’re going to cheat this week and have MoanDay a little early. Yes, we’re always eager for the inspiration, but I’m actually planning ahead because my family and I are going on vacation next week.

Today I want to talk about the allure of the tattoo. Years ago, I could take ‘em or leave ‘em, but I’m finding myself more and more fascinated by them. Now, I have discriminating tattoo tastes. The man must be appropriately hot and the tattoo sexy and relevant. Quite frankly, I’m not really into the religious ones or elaborate graphics. Then again, sometimes that depends. Here are some subtle, and not so subtle, examples:

That last one… Yowza!!!

So, are you a fan of tattoos or do you like your guy smooth and unmarked? Writers, what usually prompts you to give your hero a tattoo? How do you decide what it is?

I don't mind tattoos. Some people look great covered in tattoos and others look ridiculous. I agree that hot men carry them off better.

The DH has a tribal band around his left bicep and #2 son has a winged foot on his bicep (he was a runner in college and is a graduate assistant track coach now). I, however, will not be getting a tattoo in this lifetime.

Anyone remember Carly from last season's American Idol? She had lots of tats, which I wasn't crazy about. But her husband was freakisly tattooed all over his face and arms.

IMHO, a certain level of tattoing is fairly accepted in society these days, but once you go beyond a certain point, your stock value begins to drop.

A small one doesn't bother me -- in fact, the tat in the first photo is pretty hot, and it isn't small -- but overall I don't care for them. Carly on American Idol has a good voice, but all the tats gave me an "ick" feeling.

A tat that means something is different from getting large portions of your body inked. What is that person trying to say? "Look at the ink instead of me?" That's exactly what happens. A lot of ink draws my attention away from the person; all I can focus on is the ink, which is a detriment to the person.

The fashion for tats comes and goes. Right now it's in fashion. When it goes out, a lot of people who got one because it's fashionable will still be inked, and people will be making snide remarks because of it. Why not just go for a temporary tat, if you feel the need for extra adornment. Make it like jewelry, something you can change as your mood changes, or to match your dress. I love bling, so why don't we have jeweled/sequined temporary tats? Why go with something that's permanent, and if you change your mind is both painful and expensive to remove? And which might clash with your clothes?????

Angel, As you know, I particularly like the last photo....

If there is going to be ink on a guy, I think it must be strategic, and it has to add to his allure, not detract. (And being a pretty sexy guy goes along way in that department).

I agree with P.M.--too much and things just go down hill.

I also like what Maven Linda had to say--temporary tat's with lots of bling, I think that would be cool.

As a side note, I have a huge intrest in the history or story of the tattoo--currently I'm a bit obsessed over the crime/prison tattoos and why they are placed. Lately, most crime organizations are opting out of tattoo--because they are easily marked.

Still, I'm thinking about it...

I'm not big on tattoos. All I can think of is how they'll look when the person is 80. Ewww.

I am not a tattoo fan - I like them in my romance novels however. LOL.

There was a cobra tatoo I think in a Toni Blake novel - I hate snakes but for some reason this one was fascinating. Also Kate Angell's baseball heros have tattoos - one has I stand command in his groin area - funny - but must have been painful.

I dont like anything too elaborate and defintiely do not like all the colors. In real life may a small appropriate one would not be so bad. And yes the guy has to be hot!

I waver on tats. I'm not sure where I stand officially.

I've seen some really cool tats on really hot guys, and I do like those. But, yes, there's definitely a line where it moves to icky.

The Rock. *sigh*

My hubby has one tattoo. He got it when he was 19, and it's an eagle. He occasionally talks about getting another one, but I don't think he's serious. Me? I've thought about it, but it comes down to pain. No likey.

I like the first guy :-) That is sexy as hell to me.

I'm planning on getting a tat in the next several months. Small. On my lower back so I can cover it up if I want. It's a swirly heart with the chinese symbol for writer inside.

Yeah, there's something about the first one that makes me run my fingers over it. Maybe its just knowing how sensitive that body part can be. Yum.

DB would never get one. I'm sure if he could manage it, he'd banish mine, but he's learned to live with it. I mentioned the one I'm getting when I sell and he didn't squirm too much. I think its all about placement, proportion and personal meaning.

There's going to be a lot of droopy tattoos in the nursing home, so I figure I won't be alone. We can all sit around in the bingo room and play "guess what this used to be."

Yep. No. 1 does it for me. Not too much, not too little. Just perfect!

I don't have any tattoos due to the fact it involves needles and pain. I'm out. Just thinking about it gives me chills.

SP - you crack me up!

#1 is definitely hot! I like where his tattoo is placed.

My #1 has our last name tattooed in Gothic Letters across his upper back. He also designed a Celtic cross and had that tattooed on his right shoulder/upper arm. I don't like the fact that he's inked his skin but they look cool and are meaningful to him.

Keith Urban has a phoenix on his lower left forearm that looks really cool while he plays guitar. It also has intense personal meaning to him. I like it.

Me get a tattoo? Highly unlikely.

I don't like them when they're distracting but they can be pretty sexy. And I'm always curious as to what they mean to the people who chose to get inked.

I don't mind a few tattoos, but I don't like the man to be covered in them. To much of a good thing can be bad.

Small yes, all over, no - borders on tacky whether it's a guy or lady. Me with a tattoo - never, too much pain, I hurt just thinking about it. I have to sit down just to get my flu shot.
