Vacation for Mommy

This week something very different is going down in Angel Land. For the first time since I became a mother, I’ll have no children for a whole week! Yay! Yikes!

This is the first year that both of my kids are going to stay with my mother out of state during the summer. Before this year, I didn’t think Little Man was ready. Even this year, I’m a little concerned, but he wanted to go, so he’s staying. I’ve explained that 6 hours is too far away to drive if you get scared in the middle of the night. And my mother is a wonderful grandmother with plenty enough experience to handle any fears or worries. I know they are in good hands.

So I get what other people call a vacation. I just don’t know what to do with myself. Actually, I do get to go on vacation for 2 days every fall, when I join my fellow chapter members on a retreat. But this is a week. At home. No kids. No whining. No fighting. No cooking (unless I want to). No Disney TV. And no McDonalds. What shall I do? Hmmmm….

1. WRITE
Definitely! I’ve been plotting and planning a new book, very exciting, and I’m hoping to get some chapters written this week.

2. SHOP
Well, it was my birthday this past weekend, and I need new shoes for Nationals…

3. LUNCH
Or maybe dinner? Doesn’t matter, because I don’t have to be home for baths or bedtime. The hubby is capable of taking care of himself, right? Actually, he and I do have plans to celebrate my birthday while the kids are gone.

4. DRIVING SCHOOL
:( After 20 years on the road, I recently got my first speeding ticket. The only downer this week will be mandatory driving school in a very rough part of town, at night… Scary.

So tell me, what would you do if you had a whole week to yourself? I’ll get back to you… once I finally decide to get out of bed. :)

AC is at day camp this week, so I get an 8-3.30 break every day this week. I'll be spending it writing...

I am looking forward to sleep away camp later this summer!

What will you do with yourself?? :)

I'm getting a little vacation, too. DB is going to Maryland on Thursday, so I'll have the whole weekend to myself.

I'll probably do laundry.

I have whole months to myself now, but I still remember the summers when my boys were little and home for three years... er... months. I'd have killed for a week alone. Both grandmothers were a day's drive away and they never got to spend a week with grandma.

These days I fill my weeks with reading, some writing if I'm lucky, shopping (and usually not for the fun stuff), lunches with my Red Hat group, laundry, ironing and housework and my weekly trip to Birmingham for my divorce group meeting.

Trust me when I tell you that your children will be grown before you know it.

Amen PM. They do grow up before you know it! I, too, don't have anyone at home most of the time, so I get to schedule my days as I want (or how everyone else wants - since you don't work would you...). I do remember the frustration of entertaining kids all day and longing for the time the school bell rings to start classes. I actually miss it though (ok, senility is setting in). Have fun Angel and Happy Birthday Late!

I'm up this morning! Late, but I'm up. Though considering I didn't roll into the driveway until 11:30 last night, that shouldn't be surprising.

It was tough leaving my babies yesterday, but we managed with only a few tears. I'm going to call and check in, here in a little while.

Today I plan to set some writing goals and celebrate my birthday with my husband (a little late). Must decide on a reward if I meet my writing goals. Any suggestions?

I think it sounds like a grand adventure for the kiddos--some quality time with grandma that I'm sure they'll all love. (and they'll come home with a great appreciation for Mom & Dad, too ;)

A week to myself? What's that? I'd definitely write. Probably wouldn't cook. I'd still get up early because that's my best writing time, but I'd just sit down at the computer in my jammies and go to town. Wouldn't worry about dishes or laundry or cleaning house or anything. Just do what I feel like doing when I feel like doing it.

Enjoy!

Yep, Julie, my kids will have a wonderful time. My mother lives in Florida, so she has plans for the kids to swim most days (at rivers, the beach is currently ruined by the oil slick), visit some attractions, and play games. They'll have a bunch of fun, I'm sure.

I called to check in this morning and everyone slept last night and is excited about their day. So I can start my week with a relieved "Mommy" mind and excitement!

I'm single, so you would think I would take off work and actually have a week to myself. However, my family usually has something I need to be at when I take time off from work.

Other than taking off for RWA in July, I don't have time scheduled off just for me(RWA is for me, but I know it will be crazy). If I had a week to myself, I would probably spend it reading. I have so many books in my house to read right now, I could go a year without buying books and still have books to read. I also would stay in my pajamas most days. I love a pajama day. I however would like the outside temps to be a little cooler so I don't melt when I go out on my balcony for a little time in the sun. Maybe I'll take a week off in the fall for me...

Just when I thought I'd have time for me, they sent me to work. ;)

These days will pass so quickly, you'll think you blinked. Everyone needs to enjoy their babies as long as they can. :D
