Welcome to Big Hair Day on the Playground! Our love of the 80's is well-known, and today we celebrate the wonders of what we did to our hair in that glorious decade of outrageousness. While the 80's is known for the Big Hair, who can forget the Mall Bangs, the poodle perm, the Flock of Seagulls asymmetrical glory...
A few brave souls answered our call for pictures (while some pretended to be deaf. I'm looking at you, Rhonda Nelson.). So, here, for our amusement and nostalgia...
No one, and I mean no one has bigger hair than Counselor Shelley. It's bigger than her body! It's leaving the frame! (That hole in the ozone layer? It started above Shelley's house.)
Maven LJ rocks a perm with those large-frame glasses...
Honorary Playfriend Dina has Big Hair *and* a striped parka!
Unfortunately, the picture is a bit dark, but check out those side wings with my Mall Bangs (over my shoulder you can see more of my bad bleach job...) The electric blue lame dress with the asymmetrical tired skirt and hip bow is just the bomb!
Smarty Pants spent quality time with a curling iron to achieve this 'do.
The Playground Monitor was monitoring kids in the 80's and decided to share the start of big hair with us instead.
Ellen Hartman would like me to note here that her hair is naturally straight -- this is the result of the wonders of 80's perm technology.
Maven Beverly has some fabulous big hair to go with her shoulder pads.
The Playfriends relive their youth at SP's birthday party. The sad thing is that I think I wore all of those outfits at some point in my life...
Dina wins a prize for being brave enough to play. Now let's vote for bragging rights... which hairstyle is *your* fave?

I can't believe I didn't have shoulder pads to go with my big hair. It must have been an off day for me, fashionwise. ;-)
Glad to know I was not alone in my youthful zest for style! You all look maaarvelous!
LOL. We are brave, aren't we, to go public with these pictures? And now, they will never die . . .
My favorite hairstyle of all time was called (I think) the Sassoon. It was very short, but had some shape. My thin, straight hair LOVED it, when I was in Junior High. It was so incredibly short, and I couldn't carry it off now. Not without losing fifty pounds and getting a facelift. :-)
LJ
Gracious! That's big hair. I meant to play, but never managed to dig out the photos and scan them. (Think I'm relieved, really.) In the 80s, I also had raccoon makeup to go with the big hair. :)
Yes we are brave, and I'll admit to giggling at every photo.
LJ mentioned Sassoon, and when I lived overseas I actually went to a Vidal Sassoon salon for my haircuts. It was a modified version of Dorothy Hammill's famous wedge cut, and oddly enough, thirty-odd years later I'm back to a similar cut. And my thin, body-less hair loves it.
I think we need to have this day again and lean on some folks (cough, cough, Rhonda Nelson cough, cough) a little heavier for a photo.
As a child of the eighties I LOVED big hair! My best friend's hair was so tall that she had to turn her head side ways to get into my Pinto! Ah, the glory days.
Thanks to all of you who were brave enough to share it was a good way to start my day with a smile!
Ok I'm not really Anonymous jus not awake yet and I have only had a cup of coffee...

Wow. Is there any way to size down that picture so my GIGANTIC cranium isn't quite as disturbing? :)
For the record, I think I was 12 or 13 in that picture and the hair was the wicked crafting of my mother. Oi.
At DB's reunion last week, they had yearbook pictures up that put even Counselor Shelley to shame. Scary stuff.
Oh, so funny! Love, love, love the pics!!! And those perms, wow!
The only big hair I've ever had was for Smarty Pants's party. It took me FOREVER! I can't imagine doing it every day....
Angel
Can't. Type. Laughing.
Really, I meant to play but completely forgot to scan and send my pictures. We can discuss whether the lapse was intentional later. :-)
Instigator
Instigator's picture has been added...
Sigh... why is it that Instigator looks cute, even with big hair? You're lucky you're my friend or I'd hate you.
LOL I look cute because that's my senior picture and I had a team of people working on me...hair, make-up and clothes. It takes a village (which is why I love you guys!! There's no way I'd be able to get ready for the HQ party with out you.)

Oh, and trust me. There are plenty of embarassing big hair pictures of me. I just chose not to send a copy of them to PC. ;-D Didn't you see them at my mom's?
Instigator
Funny and thanks for sharing your pictures. Mine are packed up but hopefully before the end of the summer those pictures will be back out.

Sorry, Kim! No way in hell was I submitting that picture. There's a reason I don't have those photos here--they make me cringe, lol. But my hat's off to all of you!
Alright, Kira, I forgive you for being cute.
Rhonda, for shame. Your hair coulda been a contender!
I was a kid in the 80s, so I didn't have a big hair. But here are some big hairs and some not so big:

Alexandra Frost...
Why is it everything is blamed on the mother?
Playground Monitor...
That's the ONLY time your hair was styled in that manner --and it WAS probably my fault!
Cause it was my mother's fault! She was always wanting to give me perms and do evil things to my hair. It was the early 90s... I would've rather just stuffed my hair up under a hat and disappeared.
Thank you.
All the hair styles look great (when they were taken, lol). Sorry, I forgot to check back earlier. I knew I had a better pic, but couldn't find that one, lol.
