The Power of Lunch

I’ll admit to having a couple of tiny superstitions. There are the basic ones—knocking wood, tossing salt, etc—but those aren’t really superstitions any more. It’s more like folklore fun. Everybody does it.

Artists of all shapes, though, seem to be a superstitious bunch. Just ask around. Professional athletes are, too. I have a long, drawn-out theory of superstitions among performance types that I won’t bore you with here, but when you have no other reason to understand why on some nights you hit the triple pirouette with no problem and on others you fall and break a foot, superstition seems as good a reason as any. It’s either that or worry about butterflies in the Amazon flapping their wings and bringing on chaos…

I have a couple left over from my dancing days. Big superstition number one: Red Carnations. For the love of dog, don’t give me red carnations. They’re Bad Luck. They give me the willies just looking at them. The Artistic Director of my dance company wouldn’t let the things past the stage door. I also will not wish you “Good Luck” if you’re going to do something physical or performance-related. Everyone knows that, right? But no one in their right mind would tell a dancer to “Break a Leg.” Instead, I will wish you much Merde. (Yes, your high-school French is correct. That means what you think it means.)

Until recently, I didn’t have any writing related superstitions. No lucky writin’ hat. No turn around three times before I sit at the desk. Nothing.

But I am now a believer in Lunch. But not just any lunch. It is Lunch with Lynn.

The first time was actually dinner. Lynn and I went out to eat and the next day she got the call that she’d won the Instant Seduction contest. A few days later, we go to Lunch and she comes home to a Golden Heat finalist call. We did Lunch to celebrate me finishing the revisions on my book, and the next day I got the email that said the editor loved it and could I send her my phone number. (Yes, I forgot to give the editor who had my book my phone number. Sigh.) Twenty-four hours later, I got The Call.

We figured we might be on to something.

We now go to Lunch every time one of us sends something off to our editors. Without fail, within a day or two, we hear back some sort of good news. Revisions, acceptance, titles, something good and writing related. (The only time Lunch has failed us is with the Golden Heart. We did Lunch on Saturday before the awards ceremony, but by then it was too late. Pity we didn’t know when the judges were actually reading her entry. Maybe we should have Lunched continuously during the judging process.)

Are we each other’s lucky charm? Does our Lunch somehow affect the Universe? Don’t know. All I do know is that Lunch is not to be skipped nor taken lightly. It has earned its capital letter.

Of course, it helps that Lunch is fun and a great way to break up the monotony of my days in front of the computer. Lunch with a friend is always good. The fact that it seems to have some kind of cosmic publishing power doesn’t hurt.

I’ve heard of Power Lunches before, but I’m a believer in the Power of Lunch.

(Sorry, Lynn, but you are never allowed to move away. I hope you like Alabama. Stay hungry, honey. My career needs you.)

Do you have a superstition or lucky charm?

I have no lucky charm, so let me know the next time you all are doing lunch. I'll be there.

Whatever happened to "Cross your fingers"?

LOL!! As soon as I clicked over and saw the title, I knew this would be about those lucky Lunches. Who knows why it seems to work? But I'm not arguing with the power of Lunch!

And I've told Hubby I cannot move, ever. Alabama and Lunch are too important to my future as a writer.

I'll never forget the lunch before PC got The Call. Because up until that point, it'd been me with all the Lunch Luck. And she asked me what I had out there now -- a contest entry, a submission somewhere, etc. I thought about it and said, "No, it has to be you. I don't have anything."

We know what happened next. :) So, PC, want to do lunch this week? I've got an idea for a new book that I want to send to my editor....

It's official. My career will stall because I can't go to lunch during the week! (Sob!)

No supersitions that I can think of aside from backing up my files multiple times when Mercury is in retrograde. Maybe I need one. Lucky underwear or something...

I don't really have any superstitions. What few I do are half-hearted. But I'll become a believer really quick with that kind of track record. :)

Mercury retrograde!!! I completely forgot. So I do have a superstition, mostly because of my track record during Mercury retrograde. The biggest thing being travel problems during that time and guess when my mother board on my computer went out. Yep, mercury retrograde. Sigh... it hates me.

And Mercury is in retrograde starting tomorrow through October 15. So we can't shop for anything pricey or sign contracts during that time.

I don't really have any superstitions (except for maybe being careful when Mercury is in retrograde and not walking under ladders because it's just never looked like a smart thing to do).

When are y'all going to invite the rest of us to lunch? Hmmmm?

Mercury in retrograde - never take it lightly. I light candles in my little writing corner of the world (no, really, I'm sequestered in a corner). Clear and focused intent is powerful practical magic - and never underestimate the power of a few wise words whispered on the wind... I like Lunch, too.

PM, we will happily go to lunch with you if you think it might work for you, but I'm not messing with the Power of Lunch when I need its mojo.

LOL, PC. Just wait. When I first sold I had no little superstitions/good luck rituals, etc. Too many to list now. I think it's a sign of serious neuroses. :)

Will you dilute the power of Lunch if you invite other people? If that's the case then I think the GH is my fault...I was there that lunch before you got the call and maybe stole some of the mojo. I'm sorry!

No superstitions or good luck charms except for a few Feng Shui items here and there. But I'm up for all ideas to encourage creativity and good luck.
Ok, I've never heard of Mercury in retrograde. But now that I have I'm going to google it.
Sometimes I feel like I have been living under a rock!

Ooooh, I forgot about my feng shui stuff. Right after I feng shui'd my office is when I sold my first short story. I'd been in a little slump until I put up the I-ching coins I bought in Chinatown and whammo -- I sold #24 ten days after getting back from SF and #25 sold three days after that. #26 followed a month after that.

I'm a firm believer in feng shui.

PC and Lynn -- I'm available most days. :-)

And the DH is in San Diego this week so I'm free as a bird til late Thursday afternoon (provided what happened on the flight out doesn't happen on the flight back -- they cancelled his 3:30 flight and put him on a 6:30 flight instead, so he got to San Diego around midnight our time).

It's Instigator's fault I didn't final in the GH! We diluted the Lunch mojo and there was only enough for one final! Argh! If we'd only known then what we know now!

Oh well, we'll know better when RITA time rolls around...

Lynn Raye Harris said...

OMG, the Lunch mojo was diluted by Instigator!! I was riding high on the Instant Seduction contest, so the limited mojo went to me! PC, she owes you. *gg*

Yikes, PM. I hear this happens a lot these days. My flight to SF was like that. I was hours later than I was supposed to be.

Perhaps we will have to test you at Lunch and see if it works for you too.....

I don't have any susperstitions. I don't consider Mercury in Retrograde a superstition at all. It's more a scientific fact. Back up everything and don't sign any contracts until it's passed.

I could use some Lunch mojo. Couldn't we all? :-) Very cool.

I wonder if Instigator and I eating lunch while we talk on the phone at our desks would qualify as "lunch" for mojo purposes...

Apparently the only thing Mercury in Retrograde is good for is moving along stalled projects. I'm hoping a few of my projects get a little (or a big) push.

I'm okay, supposedly, in Mercury Retrograde because I'm a Virgo and it's my ruling planet. It slows things for me, but isn't supposed to create havoc. I can only hope.

My aunt is into Feng Shui. She advised us on how to position the bed and where to hang mirrors.
