It Gets Better Every Time

I'm a big movie fan. You'd think I would like romances, but in fact, a hazard of being a romance writer is never being satisfied with chick flicks. There are a few exceptions - You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, While You Were Sleeping - but for the most part, I stick with funny movies. The dumber the better, although my uncle insists its a more sophisticated level of stupid. I'm not too big on physical comedy or bathroom humor, so Jim Carey movies are out. Ben Stiller makes me nervous. There has to be more to it, a reflection of my own weird sense of humor.

I have a decent sized collection of DVDs, but I'm pretty particular about movies I buy. It has to be something I will watch over and over. Something worth memorizing. Something worth reciting at inappropriate times. (One day I will share the unfortunate Castle Anthrax Incident of '97.) Of course, Monty Python and Rocky Horror are in my collection, along with the romances above, movies by Mel Brooks, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribbean, etc. I have a similar rule about CDs - it has to have at least 3 songs I like before I can buy it. I guess iTunes has made my life easier there.

The funny thing, though, is that usually once I've bought it, I don't watch it again. I have several that still have the wrapper on them. Maybe its because they're dedicated to memory and I don't have to watch them anymore, but I must possess them. At the same time, there are movies that aren't necessarily in my top ten, but that I have a compulsion to watch over and over, no matter what I'm doing when I see they're on. Even if I've just watched it. Some channels play movies a couple times in a day and I've been known to watch them twice. Even back to back. Its a sickness. I just can't turn them off.

This weekend, perusing the guide on the tv, I ran across a few of my favorites. Don't get me wrong - I'm not talking Academy Award winners here. They're probably ones most people would skip right by. But for some silly reason, they are movies I watch every time I see them.

Among the ones that get me every time are: Empire Records, Down Periscope, Ocean's 11, Hot Shots, and Miss Congeniality. Like I said, mostly stupid although they all have details in them I love or turns of dialogue I wish I'd written. Some of my favorite quotes come from these movies. I've wasted quite a bit of time watching them again and again.

Do you have any movies you can watch a million times and never get tired of seeing them?

I love "Romancing the Stone" and used to have to be content with an old VHS copy taped off the TV. Thanks to my wonderful son and DIL, I now have the DVD with bonus interviews with the cast. I loved the movie before I began reading and writing romance. Maybe it was a sign.

In the Rom-Com category -- and I love Rom-Coms -- Keeping the Faith and Truth About Cats and Dogs.

I'm addicted to NetFlix -- I can reorder movies I like for free :-)

Dodge Ball My kids love it. My son's girlfriend, Amy loves Zoolander. I've never seen it.

I LOVE Empire Records and Down Periscope. Very quirky.

Since we've established that I'm the horror queen around here, I guess some of my must sees come as no surprise: 13 Ghosts (watched this the other night on MTV), House on Haunted Hill, the original Halloween, anything Vincent Price. But I also love Romancing the Stone. :)

I do love Romancing the Stone. I need to get the DVD. I tried taping it on tv once, but would you believe they pre-empted it for some dumb wall coming down? It was in Berlin. I was 10 and furious. The importance in comparison to my movie didn't really sink in for a couple years, then I felt bad for cussing at the tv.

Laurie - Dodgeball is gaining favor on my list. I've watched it a couple times and it has potential. "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball." :)

Although I never saw the original version of "Sabrina" I just love the remake with Harrison Ford. Another movie I could watch forever is "Return To Me" with Minnie Driver. I don't have the DVD's so I watch every time they are shown on TV.

I love Return to Me! I adore the meddling old people at the restaurant arguing about Italian and Irish singers and playing matchmaker.

"Pride and Prejudice," Colin Firth version. I've watched it probably 20 times. Love it. Once, when I was living in Germany and my hubby was in Korea, I spent all day watching it -- then started it all over again.

I also love "Romancing the Stone." And "Notting Hill" for some reason. "Napoleon Dynamite" has been watched in this house at least 10 times. OMG, I love that movie. Sweet!

"Something's Gotta Give" and "Lost in Translation." Both favs. I also love "Hero" with Jet Li. I think that's an amazing movie.

Epics we re-watch: "Lawrence of Arabia," "Out of Africa," and "Dr. Zhivago." All the LOTR movies.

Star Wars, the original trilogy, used to be something we watched a lot of, but we haven't in a while. And not on the movie screen, so it's time to dig them out again.

I love Sabrina! And I always forget about it until someone mentions it. I'm a romance girl through and through. yes, I tend to get upset at them sometimes but when I find one I like I stick with it. Catch and Release, Pride and Prejudice, P.S. I Love You, The Thomas Crown Affair.

I put the Thomas Crown Affair in the same category as Oceans 11 - a sort of caper where I'm trying to figure things out and I watch it over and over to see what I might've missed. Love them both. I wanted to have Renee Russo's hair.

Star Wars
Apollo 13
Young Einstein (with Yahoo Serious)
Police Academy
Hot Shots
Beautiful Mind
The Truman Show -I think that's the only movie where I can stand watching Jim Carey.

My two MOST favorite movies are Moonstruck and Shakespeare in Love. I never get tired of watching them. Chocolat, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and a new favorite -- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I really love movies, so there are many more. Serenity. Romancing the Stone.

We get Netflix,so I'm buying less movies these days. Actually my Moonstruck and SIL are on video tapes, so I need to upgrade. :-)

Catch & Release is a good one.
Storm of the Century/Stephen King.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
The Lake House.
Premonition.
Day After Tomorrow.
Signs.
Mystery Alaska.
I could go on and on...I too am a movie fan!!

Ah! An important topic to be sure. Movies...

I had a quilt project we were raffling off once and while working on my portion, I watched Seven Brides For Seven Brothers 6 times in a row. For some reason the music made my fingers sew faster. ;)

Dances With Wolves, Last of the Dogmen, Notting Hill, Legally Blonde, Sweet Home Alabama, Underworld, X Men, POTC, Miss Congeniality, Young Frankenstein, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Searchers (I simply must stop and watch this no matter what), The Quiet Man, Return to Me, Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, Zoolander... Oh my gosh! I'm addicted. Better not turn the t.v. on...

I forgot Knight Tales -(Medieval times with rock music) and 10 Things I Hate About You. I like Julia Stiles with Heath Ledger.
I've heard his Casenova is good but I haven't seen it yet.

Splash was one I used to watch. Big is cute too. Both with a young Tom Hanks.
