It's The Great Halloween Blog, Charlie Brown!

Tomorrow is my favorite holiday. I've resisted the urge to have a costume contest on the blog this year because you all are ninnies and wouldn't send in any pictures last time. Not even with prizes! So sad.

Anyway, so I love Halloween. Well, parts of it. I like the fun, costume, pumpkin and candy apple side. I like seeing teeny-tiny fairies and storm troopers at my front door with wide eyes and parent's urging them to say 'trick or treat.' I like making ridiculous little treats (yes, PC) like cupcakes that look like spiderwebs, deviled egg eyeballs, and Frankenstein cakes that bleed strawberry pancake syrup. I like caramel apples and popcorn balls and watching It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on TV. I like carving pumpkins that make people look twice with surprise.

Unfortunately, with Halloween always comes the parts I don't care much for. Number one is the attitude-ridden teenagers that show up at my door for candy with a sense of entitlement. When I went out as a teenager, it was because I was dragging little kids around. Yes, I dressed up and yes, I collected candy, but there was a reason and I was certainly never rude. If one of them even looks at my pumpkins with thoughts of smashing them... anyhow...

Number two is haunted houses. The commercials are on the radio all the time and its just creepy. Aside from the one at Disney, I made it approximately 2 minutes in a Haunted House when I was 8. Out here they even have haunted corn mazes. As interested as I would be in walking a corn maze, I do not want men in masks with chainsaws chasing me around.

Last is the movies. Nearly every TV station has been playing bad horror movies nonstop. Is it too much to ask that Steel Magnolias be slipped in there between Saw IV and The Hills Have Eyes? Don't get me wrong - I'm all for the thrillers - Rosemary's Baby, Psycho, even the Exorcist, and I can appreciate some of the funny ones, but I have no interest in seeing half-naked teenaged girls getting impaled on meat hooks. Bleh. Give me Charlie Brown any day.

So, what's your favorite part of Halloween? Do you get into the scary stuff? What's your all time favorite scary movie?
SP

P.S. Don't forget that today is the very last day to enter the Not-So-Scary Halloween Contest!

This is the first year my DD is not going out trick or treating. She's a Sophomore, but only fifteen. I'm a little sad that she's grown past that stage. This year it's a party with friends. It's not the same.

But she doesn't have little ones to haul around the block, so this right of passage is over for her. I remember sitting at the beach with her this year and she lamented that she didn't have a younger child there --she wanted to build sandcastles but that wouldn't look cool.

Teens are still kids at heart in so many ways. But they have to be "grown up" out in the real world. To be honest, I'm glad mine clung to her younger joys a bit longer than most.

DH and I will be handing out candy at the door. I can't wait to see all the little ones in their costumes. It'll bring back memories of my own DD in her Nala costume, Belle Costume, Hershey's Kiss costume, and so on and so on.

They grow up all too fast.

I am not now nor have I ever been into the scary stuff. But I've heard some of the corn mazes will let you walk through during the day and then you don't have the chainsaw gang after you.

I'm going to miss not having trick-or-treaters this year. The apartment manager told me I probably won't have any kids come to the door. I remember having apartments near my house as a kid and it was easy pickings. But now, with the world as impersonal as it is, I can see how parent's wouldn't even think of allowing that. So I guess I'll just eat those Reese's peanut butter cups myself. Oh darn.

I can't wait to see the pictures of the grandbaby. She's always so cute in her costumes.

I love making Halloween treats. Last year it was a pan of brownies with "spiders" (make of apricot halves and red licorice) crawling on top and trying to escape. We get NO trick or treaters here. Seven years, and none. It's the big hill. Who wants to climb that hill for a piece or two of candy? But the grandkids come by.

We used to have great Halloween parties. One year, long before I started writing, the DH and I dressed as a couple from a romance novel cover. He was a pirate, and I had a long dress and long red hair (not my own). We even posed for clinch pictures. :-)

My brother and I, when we were too old for trick or treating but not too old for fun, used to dress up (he was a hunchback, I was a vampire) and make kids come into the house to where I was sitting, all scary and guarding the candy, to get their loot. Sadly, I don't think we could get away with that these days. :-/

It was a bummer when I stopped going, but I get excited about handing out candy. I'm hoping they don't revolt over the pretzels I'm giving out and egg my house.

The thing with teens in that in a few years, she'll stop caring what others think and if she wants to build sandcastles, she will.

I got a great idea for my Halloween treats from Southern Living Magazine -- and then when I was able to purchase Tootsie Roll Pops from the Dollar Tree (Attn: PM ;-D )I had it made.

Drape a Kleenex or paper towel around the lollipop. tie with a ribbon bow. Use a black felt tip pin to make 2 eyes and a mouth --cute little ghosts.

Halloween is not my favorite time of the year, though it is fun watching the kids dress up. This year, my children had expensive costumes they got as gifts from the Playkids to wear to the Halloween party at Disney. So I didn't buy them other costumes. But the Drama Queen has put aside her "Sharpe Prom Dress" to wear her grandmothers old clothes and be a hippy. At least she's imaginative.

Actually, my favorite part of Halloween is the scary movies (I say as the only one who watches them around here). I've watched all or part of one every night for a month, although the same ones tend to run over and over. But that's okay, we have an extensive DVD collection. :)

I do not do the scary. Period.

However, if I don't start to feel better, I won't be doing anything for Halloween this year...

SP-I told her that she'd get back to building sandcastles soon enough. And then, one day, a long time from now, she'll get to relive her youth through her child(ren). I know I did!

PM-sorry about the no trick or treaters. We didn't have many last year as it was a new sub. But there should be more this year as we are built out and lots of new little critters moved in.

I'd go to a friend's house and help hand out candy/drink some cider and relax if it were me :)

No, I don't do scary either. When hubby and daughter watch scary movies, I promptly leave the room. :O

We have a lot of trick-or-treaters come through our neighborhood. I only know about 10 of the 100 or so that show up. For those 10 I make special bags. I'm putting in glow in the dark necklaces, Halloween pencils, tatoos, spider rings and a few other goodies. It should be fun.

Oh we do a carve the pumpkin party every year. It started when my kids were young and we got together with my nephew and his wife. It's grown to husbands and boyfriends and even my 87 year old mother joins in. Lots of food including pumpkin seeds, wine and laughs.

And I just love scary. I will watch any movie - even the really bad ones. Stephen King has always been a favorite!

Get well, PC!

You're not alone, Angel. I love scary movies!! I eagerly await Halloween, Friday the 13th, vampire movies and so forth. I'll pass on the demonized clowns, thank you very much.

When I was growing up, my bro and I watched horror movies every Friday and Saturday night. Loads of fun. Remember the 50 Foot Tall Woman? LOL! Giant spiders, grasshoppers, ants, worms... Good times!

But the ones that top them all are those cuddly unfortunates screaming 'BRAINS!'.

I love Halloween. I haven't had one child come to my house to trick or treat in over 5 years, so I'm not even buying candy this year(so not on my weight watchers diet).

It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown is my favorite movie to watch around Halloween. I'm not big on being scared, so I don't really watch many scary movies anymore.

My dad always ran the "haunted house" at the school when I was growing up. I got to help him set up the guts and eyeballs and it was always really fun.
