Breakfast of Champions?

Yesterday morning, I had a Rice Krispie treat for breakfast. (I probably would have fed the same thing to AC if the Geek wouldn’t have flipped out.)

(I made a couple of batches Sunday night for the school Halloween carnival. Yes, I know that’s not very fancy, but I’m on deadline. Anyway, I’ve decided that fancy cupcakes decorated like spiders and dipped chocolate bat cookies are made simply to impress the Other Mothers. It’s a competition sometimes to see who makes the fanciest treats for class, and I don’t have the inclination to participate. The kids don’t care – they just want something tasty and Rice Krispie treats fit that bill. The Other Mothers can fight it out for the title of Best Baker. I concede. Anyhoo…)

Rice Krispie treats are tasty, so I held one out of the batch for myself, and I had it for breakfast yesterday with a glass of milk. I’ve done this before, and the Geek always acts like Bill Cosby’s wife in the “Chocolate Cake for Breakfast” skit.

I don’t agree.

Rice Krispies are a breakfast cereal. You pour them in a bowl, sprinkle some sugar over the top and pour in the milk. Millions of people all over the world do this every morning.

So let’s examine my breakfast:

Cereal.

Marshmallows – which are just sugar and corn starch. (Fat free!)

Milk.

What’s the difference?

If I add a piece of fruit, I have my well-balanced breakfast as advertised on TV.

Even if you want to object to the marshmallows, there are plenty of cereals out there with marshmallows in there (and dog only knows what’s been done to them when they went into the box. Lucky Charms are just gross.).

So you tell me: Breakfast or junk food?

I've been known to eat any and all kinds of things for breakfast. I'm not much of a cooker at the best of times, so there is no way I'm scrambling eggs and cooking bacon every morning. We live off poptarts, cereal, cold pizza, sandwich meat, peanut butter with a glass of chocolate milk. See, you are fully justified in your breakfast choices. :)

I'm sure if you did a breakdown of nutritional values of most sweet breakfast choices and compared them to cookies and other treats, they'd be darn close. Little Sister likes chocolate chip cookie dough pop tarts. I couldn't make myself buy them. At least with the strawberry ones, I can convince myself it has some nutritional value. You can't tell me a rice krispy treat is any worse than a chocolate chip cookie dough pop tart or a doughnut or any other sweet breakfast pastry type thing.

When I was a kid, my mom was of a similar mindset. More than once I was shoved out the door with a couple oreos.

I love Bill Cosby, and I often used his reasoning with my children's food choices. Cold pizza for breakfast? Why not? It's a grain product and dairy product and protein -- just like a bacon biscuit with cheese.

And we all know how chocolate has antioxidants and natural mood elevators. Yay chocolate!

Are you making fun of me and my marshmallow cats?!! At the time you thought they were over the top and they were time intensive. However, in my defense, I went to all that trouble because they were sold to raise money for the school. (Yes, I did want them to sell better than other items, so in a way I was competing.)

I think cold pizza or marshmallow treats, with a glass of milk, are a good breakfast - especially if it gets the kids to eat breakfast!

Mom, I have no recollection of Marshmallow cats.

Individual fruit pizzas with smiley faces? Yep.

Hundreds of crocheted stockings with candy canes? Yep.

Mom, you were the Martha Stewart of elementary school before such a thing became commonplace. I bow to your creative talents.

Wanna make something for AC's Halloween party? Can I tell the Other Mothers I made it? ~grin~

Word verif: charo. (Speaking of fruit...)

One day, I'm going to kick room mom butt at decorative treats!

My typical breakfast tastes like I'm cheating, but I'm not. Kashi Cinnamon Wheat. It's organic and sweetened with cane juice and cinnamon. OMG, I love that stuff!

But I have been known in the past to eat non-breakfast things, including cold pizza and chocolate cake. :)

Yes, SP, you will be the Mom To Beat, and all the Other Mothers will hate you for it. (The rest of us will just snicker.)

If you're wanting to practice, though, I'm sure AC's class will take those goodies off your hands. (I will be claiming credit, though.)

SP, you can do it for my kids if you like.

But I'm wondering if more and more this "competitiveness" is becoming less of an issue. I volunteered to help with the Kindergarten sock hop next week and the teacher told me I was the first in her class to do so. And only the 2nd to volunteer to attend the Tate Farms field trip with them. At my kids school, more mothers are returning to work every day and volunteering less.

Don't get me wrong, I only voluteer because I feel I should, but we're seeing more store bought goods. The PTA actually had to specify "homemade" goodies for the teacher breakfasts last year, because so many people bought things.

Personally I like vegetable soup for breakfast; and I like scrambled eggs and grits for supper.

As long as it's half-way healthy it doesn't matter when you eat it.

No, I did not feed PM soup for breakfast!

Thankfully, you didn't mention the hundred or so crocheted, chicken shaped egg cozies I made for Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. :) Being a stay at home mom meant I had free time and I would not call following a pattern being creative.

Now writing a book, that's a creative talent!

That was hysterical. I'm not a breakfast person. But over the years I've changed from mostly coffee and donuts (I was working and young lol) to nothing and now I have a glass of cherry juice (antioxidants) and Activia yogurt (not working and old lol). And I'm probably one of the few who doesn't care for Rice Krispy treats.

We're actually not allowed to bring anything to the school that is handmade anymore. At our elementary school, it must be store bought or they won't accept it. I know, crazy!

Breakfast! No question.

Although, you did remind me that I now have to go into the kitchen and make 2 batches (1/2 batches really) of fudge. Peanut butter and I'm trying my hand at butterscotch. We'll see how it turns out.

Instigator - who spent the morning at the muddy pumpkin patch today followed by a much needed nap. Really. Those kindergartners will just drain the life out of you.

I can't give up my sugary cereals like Frosted Flakes and Boo Berry.

I survived off of Lucky Charms, Captain Crunch and Count Chocula growing up. Pop Tarts when my parents could afford it.

The DH had two meats, eggs, grits, oatmeal, biscuits, the works because he grew up on a farm.

Children must have nutricious breakfasts, he says. And so, I got up every morning at 6 and prepared our kids eggs, biscuits, and bacon, pancakes, waffles or muffins. Now that the children are grown, I'm plesantly back to eating the pop tarts I love with an occasional donut or Lucky Charms fix.

Don't mess wit me Lucky Charms. ;)
