Happy Fourth of July!

This is kind of a tough day to blog. Wouldn’t you rather be outside at a cookout or something instead of inside at the computer? In respect to your holiday plans, I’ll keep this very short today…

But how does one blog about the 4th?

Shall I be all patriotic? I could, but that might lead to a discussion of politics and that’s not what this blog is about.

I could go in to a history lesson, but that, too, is fraught with possible pitfalls.

I could mention that it’s my DG’s first 4th as a US citizen, but I don’t think he’s all that hyped over the significance (it takes an awful lot to get DG hyped about anything—the boy is so laid-back he’s about to fall over.).

I know of people who use this holiday to celebrate their independence from something—a bad marriage, a bad habit, whatever—but I’m very happy in my co-dependence with DG, Counselor Shelley and the Playfriends.

But the fireworks really make me want to celebrate something personal as well… I’d hate to see them go to waste. I guess I’ll count my blessings, celebrate my recent successes, and hope for more good things to come this year.
Are you celebrating something special today? How?

I've been visiting my sister for the past week, so I'll celebrate the 4th with her and her friends. They're planning a picnic in the park by the beach tonight where we'll be able to watch the fireworks being shot off from the pier. We're also hoping to go to the beach this afternoon and maybe catch a glimpse of the con trails from the shuttle launch. If it heads north after take-off, it will fly right over here. Keep your fingers crossed for a safe launch and a northern route.

Happy 4th to you all! And congrats to DG on his first 4th as a US citizen. I'm sure it took a lot of work and sacrifice on his part to accomplish that.

Yep. The fact that I'm leaving town tomorrow, sans children. :)

We own a BBQ restaurant, so holidays are not really holidays anymore. The 4th of July is our biggest day of the year, so it begins early and everyone works. I just got out of it this year because I'm the designated baby sitter.

But tomorrow begins 3 days of vacation, as the restaurant won't open again until Saturday. And then it will be back to the grindstone for my poor husband.

So I'll see y'all in a few days!!!

Congratulations, DG!

The 4th of July always reminds us of parades, the spectacular fireworks display we watched in Vicenza, Italy, every year we were there and two years ago the fireworks display at the AAA Omaha Royals game with our son and his family. The absolute best! Or watching NYC's fireworks go off and being able to open the door and actually hear them exploding across the bay when we lived in NJ.

I think of all the battlefields I've seen, the reenactments, for instance the battle of Fort Monmouth and Molly Pitcher's efforts to fill in for her husband who had just been shot down and killed.

I think of pie. I made a blueberry and cherry pie this morning for our little cook-out. My FIL is coming down and we'll shoot off fireworks of our own later tonight at the end of our driveway and watch our neighbors do the same.

Happy Birthday, America! Your a grand ol' flag, Stars and Stripes!

Have fun,
Kathy

Argh! The blog ate my comment. This one won't be nearly as witty.

Anyway, this isn't my favorite holiday because I'm not big on fire and explosives, especially when mixed with alcohol and my next door neighbor. One ALWAYS goes on my roof.

I'm just glad this year to be home for ten seconds before I go on business travel and off to nationals. I may need to Xerox someone's packing list.
